Farm Credit System

Local Service with National Stability

The Farm Credit System is a nationwide network of borrower-owned lending institutions and specialized service organizations. The Farm Credit System provides more than $235 billion in loans to farmers, ranchers, rural homeowners, aquatic producers, timber harvesters, agribusinesses, and agricultural and rural utility cooperatives. These cooperatives, operated as Farm Credit and AgCredit agricultural credit associations, provide many types of financing including real estate and production financing.

Today, the Farm Credit System provides more than one-third of the credit needed by those who live and work in rural America.

The History of the Farm Credit System

Congress established the Farm Credit System in 1916 to provide a reliable source of credit for the nation's farmers and ranchers. The Farm Credit mission is to provide this credit by making loans to qualified borrowers at competitive rates and providing insurance and related services.
